Assisted Living Cost in New Mexico
New Mexico is a state of sharp contrasts on this page: Santa Fe costs $1,965 a month more than the state median, while Las Cruces costs $1,114 less, and adult day care at $200 a day is more than double the national rate. The Medicaid route also has a registry, so the payment section below tells you where to join it and what it does not pay. If your parent lives in the Albuquerque area, budget from the Albuquerque figure, not the state figure, and get the room and board charge in writing before you tour.

New Mexico assisted living costs, against the national median
The table below is the CareScout 2025 survey for New Mexico, with the national median beside it. The survey collected more than 25,000 provider rates between July and November 2025 and reports medians, the middle price, not averages pulled up by luxury buildings. Assisted living figures are for a private one-bedroom apartment for 12 months of care.
| Care type | New Mexico median | National median |
|---|---|---|
| Assisted living, per month | $5,950 ($71,400 per year) | $6,200 ($74,400 per year) |
| Home care, non-medical caregiver, per hour | $30 ($68,640 per year at 44 hours a week) | $35 ($80,080 per year at 44 hours a week) |
| Adult day health care, per day | $200 ($52,000 per year at 5 days a week) | $95 ($24,700 per year at 5 days a week) |
| Nursing home, semi-private room, per month | $9,125 ($109,500 per year) | $9,581 ($114,975 per year) |
| Nursing home, private room, per month | $10,633 ($127,597 per year) | $10,798 ($129,575 per year) |
The assisted living cost New Mexico median runs $250 a month below the national median, which is $3,000 over a full year (74,400 minus 71,400). Home care at $30 an hour sits $5 below the $35 national rate. Adult day care at $200 a day sits $105 above the $95 national rate. A semi-private nursing home room at $9,125 sits $456 below the $9,581 national figure, and a private room at $10,633 sits $165 below the $10,798 national figure. For the full national picture, read how much does assisted living cost and how much does a nursing home cost.
Assisted living cost New Mexico by place
Place medians come from the same CareScout survey, through its Cost of Care calculator, which reports the closest survey region for each place. All figures are 2025 monthly medians for a private one-bedroom apartment. The spread runs from $4,836 to $7,915, a gap of $3,079 a month between the lowest and highest New Mexico place in this table. The Rio Rancho figure maps to the Albuquerque metropolitan region, which the calculator reports for Rio Rancho, so read it as a region figure, not as a place-specific survey.
| Place | Assisted living median per month, 2025 | Against the New Mexico median |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Fe | $7,915 | $1,965 above |
| Albuquerque | $5,950 | same as state median |
| Rio Rancho | $5,950 | same as state median |
| Las Cruces | $4,836 | $1,114 below |
One of the four places in this table sits above the $5,950 state median, two sit exactly on it, and one sits below it. Santa Fe at $7,915 sits $1,965 above the state median, the largest place gap on this page, while Las Cruces at $4,836 sits $1,114 below it. Albuquerque and Rio Rancho sit exactly on the state median, so the state figure is a fair starting budget for the Albuquerque area but not for Santa Fe or Las Cruces. Do not treat the state median as the price in any of these places: use the place figure, then replace it with three written quotes in that place, with apartment size and care level stated. For how to use competing quotes, read can you negotiate assisted living costs.
What the monthly bill includes, and what it leaves out
The median buys the building and the base service: a private apartment, meals, housekeeping, supervision, and activities, with staff on site around the clock. It does not buy every charge a resident actually pays. Care is priced in levels, and the level rises as help needs grow, so the second year costs more than the first even before any annual rate increase. Medication handling, a higher care level, and a second occupant are commonly billed on top of the base rate, and many buildings charge a one-time community fee at move-in.
New Mexico licenses assisted living facilities through the Health Care Authority, Division of Health Improvement, Health Facility Licensing and Certification Bureau, under rule 8.370.14 NMAC. A licensed assisted living facility cares for two or more adults who need help with one or more activities of daily living. A boarding home is a separate, lower-acuity license for residents who need help with instrumental activities such as meals and housekeeping rather than personal care, so a boarding home is not an assisted living facility. Ask at the tour, in writing, which license a setting holds, which services the base rate covers and which are billed as extras, and what each extra costs. The tour checklist on assisted living checklist groups those questions for you.
Medicaid in New Mexico: Turquoise Care Community Benefit
New Mexico's Medicaid help for assisted living runs through the Turquoise Care Community Benefit, the home and community based services benefit inside Turquoise Care, New Mexico's Medicaid managed care program, which replaced Centennial Care on July 1, 2024. A home and community based services benefit is the state program that pays for care services outside a nursing home. The Community Benefit is for members who meet a nursing facility level of care but live at home, in a family member's home, or in an assisted living facility, and it is delivered through managed care organizations. The benefit pays for care services in the setting, including assisted living services, but it does not pay room and board: the state rule states plainly that coverage does not include the cost of room or board. There is a registry for the program, called the Central Registry, and slots open by need, so join the registry through the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-800-432-2080 rather than waiting for a crisis. The registry process can take many months, and eligibility is not back dated. For the national Medicaid rules, read does medicaid pay for assisted living, and for the full payment map, read how to pay for assisted living. Medicare does not pay for assisted living room charges or custodial care; see does medicare pay for assisted living for the exact boundary.
VA resources in New Mexico
For a veteran parent, two New Mexico routes sit beside the private market. The first is VA Aid and Attendance, a monthly cash benefit added to a VA pension for a veteran or surviving spouse who needs help with daily living; the amounts and rules are on VA Aid and Attendance requirements and veterans affairs assisted living. The second is the state's own veterans home system. New Mexico has two state veterans home locations: a standalone home in Truth or Consequences, and a veterans home unit at Fort Bayard Medical Center near Silver City. Both are state veterans homes, not private assisted living communities, so treat them as a separate application track, not as a price comparison. For VA health care, use VA.gov to find the facility nearest your parent.
New Mexico against the national median, in one row
Assisted living cost New Mexico at $5,950 a month sits $250 below the $6,200 national median, home care at $30 an hour sits $5 below the $35 national rate, adult day care at $200 a day sits $105 above the $95 national rate, and a nursing home semi-private room at $9,125 a month sits $456 below the $9,581 national figure. New Mexico is a cheaper state for assisted living, home care, and nursing home rooms, and a markedly pricier state for adult day care. At $9,125 a month, a semi-private nursing home room costs $3,175 a month more than the $5,950 assisted living median in the same state, so a parent whose needs are close to the nursing facility line should still price both settings in the same place.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Turquoise Care Community Benefit pay for room and board?
No. The benefit pays for care services in the setting, including assisted living services, but the state rule states coverage does not include the cost of room or board. Budget the housing portion from income, VA benefits where eligible, or family funds, and confirm the facility's room and board charge in writing before admission. Join the Central Registry through the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-800-432-2080, since slots open by need and the process can take many months.
Why do Albuquerque and Rio Rancho share $5,950?
Because the CareScout calculator maps the Rio Rancho entry to the Albuquerque metropolitan region, so it shares Albuquerque's $5,950 figure. The $5,950 figure is the Albuquerque region median, not a price measured in Rio Rancho itself. Budget a Rio Rancho move from that region figure until you hold written quotes from communities in Rio Rancho itself.
What is the difference between an assisted living facility and a boarding home?
An assisted living facility is licensed under 8.370.14 NMAC for adults who need help with one or more activities of daily living. A boarding home is a separate license for residents who need help with instrumental activities such as meals and housekeeping rather than personal care. Ask which license a setting holds at the tour, because the license sets what care the building may provide.
Does the $5,950 median cover two people sharing one apartment?
No. The CareScout median is for a private one-bedroom apartment occupied by one person. A second occupant adds a second-person fee set by each community, on top of the median, not inside it. Couples should budget the median plus the community's written second-person fee, plus a care level for each spouse who needs help, since care is priced per person. See average cost of assisted living for a couple for how couples totals are built.
Your next step is to take the place median for the city where your parent will actually live, get three written quotes that state apartment size, care level, and every extra fee, and check Turquoise Care Community Benefit and VA eligibility before you sign.
